Rocket League, a homage to soccer, is a primarily 3 vs. 3 team game. Instead of physically kicking around a soccer ball, gamers will control a car in-game and try to score the ball in the opposing team's goal. Rocket League is a great first game to get into esports with, as it plays so similarly to the well-known sport of soccer. It is a very straightforward game, but that does not mean it lacks competitiveness. There is a ranked game mode in Rocket League to see how you compare against others in the fast-paced game and ranks you accordingly. Likewise, the Rocket League Championship Series (RLCS) 2021-2022 season for pro players is backed by $6,000,000 in prize money.
HOW TO GET STARTED
Rocket League is not only available on multiple platforms but is also cross-platform. Cross-platform means that you can play on one platform, such as an Xbox, in a match with your friend who plays on the Playstation.
Available platforms include:
Playstation
Playstation 4
Playstation 5
Xbox
Xbox 1
Xbox Series X
Nintendo Switch
PC (computer)
Windows
Mac
Linux
Although PC is an option to play Rocket League, most players prefer to use a controller on PC. All you need to do so is to use a controller with a USB or use an add-on USB converter. Most esports titles use a mouse and keyboard for the most competitive play, but Rocket League is an exception. The controls for Rocket League are much better suited to be played with a controller.
DEVELOPERS
Rocket League was originally made by Psyonix and released in 2016 as a paid game. Due to the game’s growth in popularity, Epic Games acquired Psyonix in 2019. Soon after the acquisition, Epic Games released Rocket League through the Epic Game launcher as a free game. Epic Games host many titles, most notably Fortnite and Rocket League. Rocket League is also partnered with Monstercat, an independent record label for electronic music. Monstercat music plays in-game and features what song is playing on the screen. When you hear the great music in-game, a Monstercat artist is responsible.
ROCKET LEAGUE SIDESWIPE
If you weren’t getting enough of Rocket League, or wanted to try out a similar game easily, Rocket League Sideswipe is a great solution. Sideswipe is a mobile version of Rocket League. Normal Rocket League plays in 3D, whereas Sideswipe plays in 2D. It is a 1 vs. 1 style game where you try to score a ball against your opponent, like Rocket League without the teammates.
